Tasting - Domaine Pouillon Black Dot

Domaine Pouillon Black Dot enjoyed on 1/23/14
Name: Domaine Pouillon
Variety: Black Dot - 23% Zinfandel, 23% Mouvedre, 19% Syrah, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Grenache
Region: Columbia Valley, Lyle, Washington
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $24.99

Winery review: The nose of Black Dot delights with hits of Lambert cherries, licorice, cloves, cassis, and blood orange rind. This wine has a balanced tannin structure with an extremely long and chewy finish of blueberries, marionberries, anise, and earth. (Referring to 2010 blend which did not contain Mouvedre, no 2011 review available online)

My review: The nose was initially very fruit forward with the smell of blackberries, however there was also a hint of spice such as cinnamon, but less sweet. The texture was soft and rich with flavors of fig and spices such as clove. It also tasted peppery with hints of blackberry jam which left behind a hot mouthfeel. This initial harshness dulled over time and made the wine smoother with a residual warmness. I enjoyed this wine immensely because of the mix of some of my favorite varietals. I paired this wine with the movie Bottle Shock (which I also enjoyed greatly!).
